Why should I make my home more energy efficient?

There are many benefits to making your property more energy efficient and most importantly making these improvements the right way! There are two main ways to increase your properties energy rating, either by adding insulation or improving your heating system. Another way to improve your home is to add technologies such as solar panels. This will allow you to generate your own energy to offset the price of drawing electricity from the grid.

Insulation will reduce the amount of energy you need to heat your home, giving you greater piece of mind in a world of fluctuating energy prices. You’ll also see your home will have an improved appearance and it can also increase the value of the property.

If you improve your heating system or add solar panels to your property you will benefit from efficiencies in energy usage. This means your cost on energy bills will reduce accordingly.

How can I afford to improve my home?

Home Hero’s mission is to make home energy efficiency improvements available to homeowners and private landlords/residents. We help make it affordable by accessing funding (to those who are eligible) to contribute to the cost of improving the energy efficiency of your home, and also provide access to finance solutions to cover the full cost or remaining cost.

Who can Home Hero help?

You could benefit from Home Heros’ service if you are:

  • A private tenant (while any funded works will require your Landlord’s permission, funding eligibility is determined by the tenant. We therefore encourage you, and/or your landlord to fill out our enquiry form to understand how you could improve the energy efficiency of your home)
  • A home owner
  • A private landlord

If I agree to improve the energy efficiency of my home, what type of measures could I have installed?

If you agree to the work, then depending on the condition and construction type of your home, a range of energy efficiency measures can be considered for installation with the help of government backed funding. These could include:

  • Solid wall insulation
  • Cavity wall insulation
  • Loft insulation
  • Solar Photo Voltaics
  • Solar Thermal
  • Air Source Heat Pumps
  • Microgeneration

These measures will improve the energy efficiency of your home, making your property cheaper to heat through reduced energy usage, and increase its warmth. It could also increase the value of the property.

What does the process look like?

Once you complete our simple enquiry form, we will be in touch to seek consent from you to check your eligibility for ECO4 funding as this requires a formal signature for processing through the Energy Savings Trusts system. If this check does not come back with a “Matched” status we can look into Flexible Eligibility as an alternative route to qualification for funding. This involves collecting evidence and submitting it to your local authority. If it is deemed your circumstances meet fuel poor classification/risk of living in a cold home they will return a declaration to confirm your eligibility for ECO4 funding.

Once the checks are confirmed we will be in touch to discuss next steps with you. You will still be offered the opportunity to proceed regardless of whether you’re eligible for funding or not, as you may wish to self-fund the work and/or take out your own personal finance. (See “How This Works Page”)

Your property will then undergo a home energy assessment by a fully trained Retrofit Energy Assessor who will confirm the suitability of installing energy efficiency improvements. To find out more about this process, (See “Home Energy Assessment Page”)

We’ll provide you with a quote to complete the installation. Upon agreement, you will then provide a deposit which will secure the work and our delivery partner, Sustainable Building Services (UK) Ltd will be in touch to confirm a start date (to erect scaffolding as required and install your energy efficiency measure(s).

Will there be any disruption?

You will experience some disruption when we are installing external wall insulation, however contractors will try to minimise this. Other energy efficiency measures should be less disruptive but you will be fully advised on the length of time required to complete works and any notable issues for access.

Some disruption will occur with external wall insulation because contractors will need to install scaffolding and prepare the property by temporarily removing external fixtures, such as disconnecting guttering, lighting, re-positioning satellite dishes install the insulation (which includes some drilling), apply a render and a topcoat, and then refit external fixtures. These will all be discussed with you prior to work commencing.

How will the work be paid for?

The work will be paid for by the following options:

  • Government backed funding – this contribute to the payment of the works and depends on your eligibility. Read more about eligibility for funding here.
  • Self-funding and/or private finance – You may have enough savings to fund the improvements yourself, or make up for any difference in cost by taking out your own private finance.

Do I require planning permission and what will my property look like?

It is unlikely that you will require planning permission, however if you have concerns, our team will help you understand this.

Most energy efficiency measures tend not to need planning permission due to the nature of intervention. However, all formal checks will be reviewed ahead of time.

External wall insulation measures can meet ‘Permitted Development’ rules, provided all elevations (sides) are improved to a similar appearance to existing properties in the area and or the existing properties look.

Similarly, where a property has existing brick features, such as quoins, lintels, etc they will be replicated in a similar brick rendered finish, where feasible, to achieve a similar appearance.

The exact appearance will be confirmed to you, and agreed, post-retrofit assessment and prior to any approval from you that works can proceed.

Should any property owner wish to have a rendered finish (appearance) outside the scope agreed with the local planning department, this would fall outside of ‘Permitted Development’ and would require the property owner to submit a full planning application. There will be costs associated with the process, and it can take several months to gain approval. As funding is limited under this scheme and is only available for a short time, there is no guarantee the works could then be funded under this scheme due to these constraints.

Who will monitor the work and will I receive a guarantee?

Home Hero and Sustainable Building Services will provide ongoing due diligence, monitoring, reporting, and controlling for all work undertaken.

All proposed works at a property are checked by us, signed off by you as the homeowner / landlord, and approved by a qualified, independent Retrofit Coordinator.

All works will be guaranteed by an appropriate guarantee or warranty certificate for additional peace of mind.
